Tengda DfD Sales Center

Our client, Tengda Construction Group, engaged StudioSZ and asked us to create a sales center building for one of their many construction job sites.  Through a series of collaborative workshops, we decided to employ a ‘Design-For-Disassembly’ strategy with the goal of creating a building that could be re-used over and over again at our client’s future construction sites.  Rather than needing to demolish or change the use of the building once the main construction site is completed, Tengda DfD is a building that will outlive its site and endure as it can be disassembled, moved to another site, and then re-assembled once again.

The project’s primary challenge is designing it in a way where all its parts and pieces can be reused at the end of its first useful life.  This requires a complete shift in the way building design is approached and informed all of our design decision-making.  Working alongside our local design partner, UAD, as well as material and construction experts, we designed the building intentionally for material recovery, value retention, and a meaningful next use.

The only way we will be able to tackle climate change and overcome our excessive emission of carbon is to fundamentally change how materials are used in the built environment.

Structural Rhythm

The modular, exposed steel structure creates a rhythm across the two long facades, while the overhanging roof above provides shelter for users underneath.

‘Disassemble-able’ Construction

The building has been detailed in a way to ensure that it can be disassembled in the quickest and most efficient way possible. The steel structure, aluminum paneling, as well as the glazing can all be taken apart for future use.

Elegant Proportions

The slender, circular profile of the vertical columns provides an elegant scale to the building when seen from the exterior. A second level terrace is afforded to office users on both sides of the building.

DESIGN

Ground Level

The building’s ground floor is comprised of the main public functions.  Users enter beneath a cantilevered roof overhang and greeted with a spacious, double-height space that houses the showroom as well as lounge and bar areas.  The first floor also offers the use of a large meeting room as well as incorporating both open and enclosed workstations for office workers.

Second Level

A sculptural, steel spiral stair connects users to the second level, most of which is made up of office workstations, both open and enclosed.  A tea room floats above the double-height space below, while exterior terraces line both sides of the office spaces, providing outdoor space for workers.
